What is the difference between background variables and background questions?
Background variables are assigned per user in the organisational structure, while background questions are asked within surveys.
Background Questions
These are included in the survey along with the other questions and are preferably placed at the end to avoid creating confusion at the beginning or influencing the respondents’ answers. They are asked to all respondents.

Background Variables
Background variables are not visible in the survey itself but are managed behind the scenes. These variables are assigned per respondent in the organisational structure, typically during user import via file (Excel) ahead of a survey, but they can also be handled manually.
NOTE! Using background variables requires that the organisation holds structured information about its respondents, in a format suitable for file import.
📌 More about background variables
Standard anonymity rules apply to all background information, regardless of whether it is collected through variables or questions.
