Index

An index is a combined score that provides an overall picture of a specific area – such as engagement, leadership, or team efficiency.

Brilliant’s indexes provide comprehensive reports and key performance indicators (KPIs) that help organisations set clear goals, compare results against benchmarks, and track key focus areas over time. Index results are presented as averages on a 0–100 scale and include graphs, trend lines, comparisons, and feedback texts for managers.

One advantage of the 0–100 scale is that index scores are visually distinct from individual question results. Another benefit is that average-value indexes allow for consistent calculation and visualisation, even when different indexes contain a different number of questions.

How It’s Calculated

  • Index questions are answered on a 1–5 scale and reported as averages, e.g. 3.7, 4.3, 2.8.

  • The index score is the average of all included questions, scaled up to 100 – regardless of the number of questions.

  • All questions in the index are equally weighted.

  • Formula: (Average -1) * 25

Example

Index Questions (6 total) Result
Question 1 3.8
Question 2 4.8
Question 3 2.3
Question 4 5.0
Question 5 4.5
Question 6 4.1
Sum 24.5
Average 24.5 / 6 questions = 4.08
Scaled to 100 (4.08 – 1) × 25 = 77
Index 77

Engagement Index

The engagement index differs slightly in its visual presentation, using a matrix with two dimensions: Energy and Clarity. The index result is based on the average of these two dimensions, which then determine the placement in the engagement matrix.

NOTE! To ensure reliability and improve the likelihood that small teams also receive index results, an index is only calculated if:

  • At least 3 responses are submitted, and

  • At least 71% of the index questions are answered.

Example: A team of 3 respondents will still receive an index result even if one person skips a few index questions, as long as this threshold is met.
