Question modules
A question module functions as a grouping mechanism and contains a collection of questions, often designed for a specific purpose or to measure an important area.
One purpose of a question module could be to gather a set of questions from different areas that should always be included in a recurring survey. For example: "These 12 questions should always be part of our quarterly pulse survey." For ease of use, these questions could all be grouped into a question module with an appropriate name, such as "Quarterly Pulse".
Areas where questions are often grouped into modules include self-leadership, communication, culture, etc. For example, you can gather all culture-related questions in a module called "Culture" and easily add them to your surveys with a single click instead of selecting questions one by one.
Managed in the Library
Question modules are created and managed in the Library and must exist there and be selectable 🚩 before they can be added to surveys. There are essentially three main activities related to question modules:
- Create a new, empty module from scratch – You then fill it with relevant questions.
- Copy Brilliant’s modules – Useful if you like the structure of an existing module but want to make adjustments (e.g., modify question wording, remove one or a few questions, add new ones, etc.).
- Edit your existing modules – As time passes and organisations evolve, questions and modules may need updates. Click the three dots (• • •) on the right side of the module row to edit or delete the module.
💡Keep it simple and avoid overly large modules—multiple smaller modules offer more flexibility. Aim for purpose-specific modules rather than one large module to rule them all.
- Question modules are primarily designed to create structure and make your job of setting up surveys easier. The process becomes faster, and individual questions are less likely to be forgotten.
- Start by creating and naming your module, then add questions.
- If you’re missing questions, you can create and add them along the way—either directly through the question module or from the "Questions" tab.
- You can create as many question modules as you want, and the same question can be included in multiple modules.
- Any duplicate questions are automatically hidden when you set up surveys, ensuring respondents only answer the question once per survey.
- The questions in a question module are reported as individual questions, independent of each other, and do not provide an aggregated result (see index).
Question Modules vs. Indexes
A question module is purely for grouping questions, while an index generates comprehensive reports and key performance indicators (KPIs) to help track trends over time and compare results against benchmarks.
How you do it - an example
Scenario: Your organisation is currently conducting a culture initiative and wants to track awareness of your values four times this year. You have created several culture and values-related questions and want to group them into a module to make survey setup easier and ensure consistency.
- You click on Library > Questions from the main menu on the left side and go to the "Question Modules" tab. There, you'll see an overview of existing content.
- You click on the green button "+ Create New", and an editing mode opens.
- Click on "+ Add questions", and a pop-up window opens. Here, you can search for questions in three different tabs: All questions, Brilliant’s questions, and My questions.
-
From the pop-up window, you can also create a completely new question if you don’t find what you need among the existing ones. By clicking "Create new question", a separate view opens where you can write and translate your question—Save and close, and you are back in the question module editor.
- Select one or more questions and then click "Add". The number of selected questions is displayed on the button.
-
- The questions are now added to your module, and you can adjust them by moving, editing, or removing questions from the module.
-
Using the icon to the left of each question, you can move questions and change their order by dragging and dropping them to the desired position.
-
Using the three dots (• • •) on the right of each question, you can edit your questions or copy Brilliant’s questions—remember to update any translations when making changes.
-
Using the same three dots (• • •), you can remove questions—this does not delete the questions from the library, it only removes them from the module.
-
-
-
At the bottom right of the page, you’ll find "Preview"—this allows you to click through the question module and evaluate the order, wording, help texts, and number of questions included.
-
Click "Save" to return to the overview of your question modules—the module is now available when setting up your next survey.
Good to Know
🚩 Selectable - In the Library, there is a toggle switch next to each question and module that controls whether they are available when setting up surveys.
By deselecting a question module or a question, you can keep them in the library as a reference while preventing older or outdated questions and modules from appearing when creating new surveys. This is useful for colleagues who can create surveys but do not have access to the Library - what they see is then always relevant.
⚠️ Brilliant’s questions and modules cannot be deleted, but you can copy them and create your own versions. When you copy Brilliant’s content, Brilliant's version is deactivated, and your version becomes active. This does not affect indexes or question modules provided by Brilliant, which remain intact with Brilliant's versions.
